Method.
EPI = 0.50 × Market Strength + 0.30 × Bracket Depth + 0.20 × Form, each scaled 0–100.
Market Strength is the log-inverse of the SA-licensed outright price (so the gap between a 5.5-priced favourite and a 1001-priced longshot reads sensibly).
Bracket Depth is 100 × exp(-price / 30) — a saturating curve that rewards top-tier teams compounding through the bracket disproportionately.
Form is the inverse of FIFA world ranking, normalised. The three weights sum to 1.00. Higher EPI = stronger team.
Frequently asked.
- What is the Edges Power Index?
- The Edges Power Index (EPI) is a proprietary 0-100 score that ranks all 48 World Cup 2026 teams on a single comparable scale. It blends three signals: 50% market strength (log-inverse of the SA-licensed outright price), 30% bracket-depth proxy (a saturating curve that rewards top-tier teams disproportionately), and 20% form (inverse of FIFA world ranking). Higher EPI = stronger team. France currently leads at 95.0; Brazil is second at 93.9. The full ranked field is on the page above.
- Why is your power index different from FIFA rankings or bookmaker odds alone?
- FIFA rankings update slowly and weight recent fixtures heavily — they don't fully reflect tournament-level expectations. Bookmaker outright prices reflect tournament expectations but flatten in the long tail (every team below 100/1 looks similar). The Edges Power Index combines both signals plus a bracket-depth saturating curve, so a team like Brazil (price 5.5, rank 6) scores meaningfully higher than a team like Mexico (price 41, rank 15) even though their FIFA ranks are within 10 of each other.
- How does Bafana Bafana score on the Edges Power Index?
- Bafana Bafana rank 48/48 on the EPI at 0.0. South Africa's outright price (c.1001) drags the market-strength component low, and the FIFA rank (95) keeps the form component middling — but Bafana's grouped-stage bracket-depth proxy is non-zero given the new 48-team format saves four 3rd-placed sides. The deeper qualitative read on SA's path lives on /groups/a/ and /teams/za/.
- How often is the Power Index updated?
- On every site build. During the tournament window (11 June – 19 July 2026) Edges rebuilds the site daily to refresh outright prices, which auto-updates the EPI. Movement-arrow indicators (↑/↓/↔ vs the prior week) populate as the second week's data lands. Subscribe to the JSON feed at /feed/picks.json for machine-readable downstream consumption.
