Warning signs
- Betting more than you originally intended.
- Chasing losses with bigger stakes.
- Borrowing money to bet, or hiding bets from family.
- Feeling restless or irritable when not betting.
- Losing sleep over bets, before, during, or after.
- Lying about how much you've bet, or how much you've lost.
- Betting to escape stress or low mood.
If two or more apply, talk to someone. NRGP counsellors are trained, free, and confidential.
Operator tools
Every SA-licensed sportsbook is required to offer responsible-gambling tools. Use them.
- Deposit limits, cap how much you can deposit per day, week, or month.
- Loss limits, cap how much you can lose per period (some operators).
- Time-out, short cool-off period (24h–30 days).
- Self-exclusion, block your account for 6 months, 1 year, or permanently.
- Reality check, periodic reminders of how long you've been logged in.
